Marmaris: Where the Aegean Meets the Mediterranean – And Your Yacht Adventure Begins

Marmaris is a charming resort town and port located on the Aegean coast of Turkey — or more precisely, right where the Aegean Sea meets the Mediterranean.

The closest and most convenient airport is Dalaman, just a short transfer away.

This town has a rich and layered history. Known as Physkos in ancient times, it was once part of Caria and has seen many rulers come and go — Greeks, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, and eventually the Turks. Marmaris officially became part of the Ottoman Empire in 1424, and in 1522, by order of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, a fortress was built and the city was renamed Marmaris — a name believed to be derived from Ancient Greek, meaning “shining” or “brilliant.”

Sadly, much of the original city was destroyed in a 1957 earthquake and had to be rebuilt, including the iconic fortress.

Despite its location on the often turbulent Aegean Sea, Marmaris is exceptionally calm. Surrounded by mountains and nestled in a sheltered bay, the city is protected from strong winds and high waves — with Rhodes Island acting as a natural breakwater. Ferries run regularly from Marmaris to Rhodes, making it easy to pop over for a Greek getaway. And if you’re chartering a yacht in Marmaris, a private trip to the Greek Islands is absolutely possible and very enjoyable.

Because of its geographical location, Marmaris has a shorter summer season than Antalya, but longer than Bodrum. One of its biggest advantages? Moderate temperatures and no strong winds. Daytime temperatures rarely exceed 35–37°C, while evenings stay comfortably around 22–25°C — without the chilly breezes common in Bodrum.

In short, Marmaris is a perfect destination for a relaxing vacation with family or friends.
And a yacht charter in Marmaris? That’s a whole new level of unforgettable.
